Smart Parenting

Being a good parent is a difficult job and every parent will agree.  Remember the key principles in discipline: respect, empathy, and love.  Also don’t forget the goals of discipline: responsibility, good judgement, self control and some tolerance for frustration.  Here are ways to have disciplining success:

1.       Establish routine.  Before two years old, children need reliability and predictability in their lives.

2.       Take time for training.  Children are not born with skills.  Training takes time and patience, especially when you are trying to replace a bad behaviour with a good one.

3.       Be positive.  Conjure positive images and do away with don’ts.

4.       Set clear and simple rules.  The clearer you are, the easier it is for your child to comply.

5.       Stay close.  Somehow our closeness has a way of almost guaranteeing your child will comply.

6.       Distract your child.  Very young children cannot understand explanations.  Just steer them away from bad behaviour toward acceptable behaviour.

7.       Room to grow, exercise timeout.  A toddler who’s having a tantrum needs the time to settle down; sometimes the parents need it too, especially if the tantrum happens in a public place.

8.       Let them make mistakes.  Do not suppress a toddler’s growing sense of autonomy.  Even if he cautions not to climb the furniture for his safety.  Making mistakes is part of growing up.

Wine for breastfeeding mom?

Some studies have shown that alcohol easily goes into breast milk.  Its concentration in breast milk peaks within one hour after ingestion.  It has also been shown that even small amounts of alcohol consumed by lactating mothers significantly reduced their infants’ intake of breast milk.  The decrease in intake was attributed to two factors: one, the altered flavor of milk; and two, babies still don’t have a mature system to metabolize alcohol efficiently.  In general, women should consume little or no alcohol while breastfeeding.
